BlackBerry To Update OS To Version 6 This Summer

In todays mobile phone sector where smartphones are the hot topic of debate, it’s very common for new and updated operating systems to be as hotly anticipated as the new handsets that will run them. All you have to do is have a look at all the press attention received when it was said that the Apple iPhone OS would be updated. So, when RIM announce an upcoming update for their aging BlackBerry OS, lots of people began to take notice.

With the name BlackBerry 6 the updated OS was announced at RIM’s WES conference this week and could be launched as early as July. RIM’s co-CEO Mike Lazaridis verified how the brand new Operating system shall be compatible with both touch screen and non-touchscreen devices and will provide serious integration with the new WebKit internet browser.

In terms of backwards compatibility, this is where things got fascinating. Lazaridis stated that the company would do its best to backdate BlackBerry 6 to existing models. That they are attempting means that it is not a sure thing which in turn indicates BlackBerry could well have several new handsets which will come out with the new operating system when it get its release later in the year.
